Underflow Baffles are installed in many different applications. The most common application is the installation at combined sewer overflows. Baffles retain floatables due to their underflow design. The most commonly used baffles are fixed baffles per DIN 19558 with a clearance between baffle and crest of 2 times the overflow head.

The disadvantage of fixed underflow baffles for systems with strong water level variation is that floatables tend to accumulate in the area between baffle and weir. During overflows these floatables are discharged into the receiving water. This can be avoided with the use of movable, upfloating baffles. Radially and vertically upfloating baffles are commonly used.

The percentage of shear floatables in sewage is relatively low. Sewage contains a much higher degree of suspended solids. These contaminants are not retained by any type of baffle. In combined sewer systems additional floatables enter the system from sealed areas, which increases the amount of floatables in combined sewage.

Fixed baffles are made in stainless steel or Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Floating baffles are mainly manufactured in FRP, since FRP is the lighter material compared to stainless steel.
