Lawmakers require in EU standard specification sheet EN752 that solids and floatables be retained inside the sewer system during combined sewer overflow (CSO) events. This measure should ensure that optically and ecologically disturbing materials like toilet paper, hygene products, condoms, plastic bags, undissolved fecals, etc. do not leave the sewer system. Stormwater screens are therefore installed at the overflow spillways of CSOs and storage tanks to significantly reduce the discharge of solids.

There are several different types of stormwater screens on the market today. The main charecteristic of stormwater screens is that solids are merely deflected back into the sewer system to be transported to the treatment plant. Solids are not removed and treated at these CSO sites. We distinguish two main types of stormwater screens: perforated screens and bar screens. Both typically come with clearances of 4-8 mm.

To avoid blockage of these systems during operation, an automated cleaning system is employed. The screen area is continuously mechanically cleaned during operation. Bascally two types of cleaning mechanisms are used: between the bars or in front of the screen area.

The bar screen offers a slightly higher degree of open area per total screen area. The perforated screen achieves a higher degree of solids retention. In order to adjust for the slightly higher screen area of the bar screen, our perforated Aqua-Screen is slightly curved. It should be decided based on local conditions and constrains which of the screen types is best suited for your application. An overview of the pros and cons of the most commonly found storm water screens is shown in the following table:

The Aqua-Screen storm water screen is a mechanically cleaned, perforated screen. It is most important to control the flow velocity through the screen. Therefore, we utilize a patented backwater level control system to keep the the screen velocity constant, as much as possible. With our scraper cleaning mechanism we avoid the meat grinder effect. We have arched the screen area to increase the open screen area. The Aqua-Screen can be installed standing up on the weir crest or lying horizontally in front of the crest or in any other angle desired. This gives us the flexibility to adjust the screen installation to the local conditions. Since the cleaning mechanism is located in front of the screen area, screenings are not compressed at the ends of the screen area. This is a common problem for bar screen systems. The Aqua-Screen CSO screen comes with electronic or hydraulic driven cleaning system.

In order to minimize the maintenance requirements the cleaning elements are equipped with a self adjusting mechanism. It is possible to exchange the screen plate without deinstalling the entire screen, This is especially helpful in case an exchange of the perforation i.e. based on changed local conditions should be necessary.
